Contractor SEO is the work of making your company findable when a homeowner searches for what you sell, in the market you serve, before they call anyone. Done properly it produces booked jobs for years without a cost per click. Done as a checklist it produces impressions nobody acts on.
What Contractor SEO Includes
Five parts. Most contractors are paying for one and assuming it covers the rest.
Technical Foundation
Whether search engines can crawl the site, index the right pages, and load them fast enough that a homeowner on a phone does not leave first.
Site Architecture
How service pages, city pages, and supporting content connect so that authority reaches the pages that actually earn work.
Local Optimization
The Google Business Profile, service area setup, and review profile. For most contractors this produces more calls than the website does.
Content
Whether your pages answer what people are searching, in the way they search it, rather than describing your company.
Links
Whether other sites reference yours. Slower than the rest and harder to fake credibly.
The sections below cover the first three, because those are where contractors have the most control and the most is usually broken. The rest of the discipline hands off to the pages linked further down.
Technical Foundation: Speed, Crawlability, Indexation
Technical SEO gets treated as optional until something breaks visibly, and by then it has been costing money for months.
Speed matters most on mobile, which is where most contractor searches happen. A homeowner standing in a hot house or a wet basement is not waiting four seconds for your hero image. Slow pages lose the visitor and, over time, lose position.
Crawlability and indexation are the quieter problems. Pages that should rank are sometimes not indexed at all. Pages that should never rank sometimes are. On one client account we inherited, a leftover test page was indexed and appearing in search results alongside the real ones.
The most expensive technical problem we see is duplication. On that same account, both the www and non-www versions of the homepage were indexed as separate pages, splitting ranking signals between two copies of the same content. One version was ranking near position 6 and the other near position 39. Same page. That is not a subtle penalty, it is half the site's authority going to a URL nobody intended to build.
None of this is glamorous and all of it is cheap to fix relative to what it costs to leave alone.
What Duplication Costs
Site Architecture And Internal Linking For Contractors
This is the part most contractor sites get wrong, and it is the part we can demonstrate rather than describe, because this site is built the way we build client sites.
The structure is hub and spoke. A hub page covers a subject broadly and links down to child pages that go deep on one piece each. The child pages link back up. Nothing floats unconnected.
Applied to a contracting business, that means a services hub linking to a page per service, a service page linking to the city pages where you perform it, and city pages linking back to the services offered there. Every page has a parent and a reason to exist.
Three rules make it work:
One Page, One Target
Two pages competing for the same search means neither wins. If you have a services page and a separate page for the same service, one of them should not exist.
Exact-Match Anchor Text On The First Link
The first time a page links to another, the link text should be the term that page is trying to rank for. "HVAC SEO" rather than "click here" or "learn more."
No Orphans
A page with no inbound links is a page search engines treat as unimportant, however good it is. This is the failure mode of most city page builds: fifty pages created from a template, linked from nowhere except a sitemap.
On the Parker account, this structure took a site from zero to more than 1,000 unique queries returning it inside six months, with top-three positions for the commercial terms in that market.
Local SEO And The Map Pack
For most contractors the map pack produces more calls than organic results do, and it is a different discipline from ranking a web page.
Three factors decide placement: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance comes from your Google Business Profile categories, services, and description, and you control it entirely. Distance is fixed. Prominence is mostly reviews.
The reason this is a separate discipline is that most of the work happens off your website entirely. You can have the best site in your market and lose the map pack to a competitor with a better-configured profile and forty more reviews.

AI Search Visibility
Homeowners increasingly ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity who to call before they open a results page. Those answers assemble from a handful of sources.
The practical work overlaps almost entirely with good SEO: structured data, consistent business information everywhere it appears, content that answers a question in the first two sentences, and specific verifiable claims. There is very little in AI search optimization that was not already worth doing.
What changes is the unit. A conversational query has no keyword to rank for, so the competition is to be one of the passages retrieved rather than one of the ten blue links.
The full treatment, including what is proven and what is still experimental, is on our AI Search Visibility page.
How Long Contractor SEO Takes
Three to six months for organic positions to move meaningfully. Longer in a competitive metro. Anyone promising faster is describing paid search, which is worth doing and is not the same thing.
The order things move in is consistent. Impressions rise first, usually inside 60 to 90 days. Clicks follow around month four. Calls and booked work follow the clicks. That lag is real and it is why the first quarterly review of an SEO program looks worse than the program is.
On the Parker account, comparing the first three months to the most recent three: organic clicks up 71 percent and impressions up 77 percent. That is the shape of a foundation working in a small market.
One warning about impressions, because it is the metric agencies hide behind. On that same account, a single page pulls more than 54,000 impressions at an average position in the forties. Position forty is page four. Those impressions produce almost nothing and they inflate every report they appear in. If an agency leads with impression growth and cannot show you where those impressions rank, the number is decoration.
Measure position for the commercial terms in the markets you serve. Measure calls and forms as tracked conversions. Measure booked jobs against source.

Questions About Contractor SEO Services
- Contractor SEO has five parts: technical foundation, site architecture, local optimization, content, and links. Most contractors are paying for one.
- Expect three to six months for organic positions to move, longer in competitive metros. Impressions rise before clicks and clicks rise before calls.
- Duplicate indexing splits ranking signals. On one client account, the www and non-www homepages were both indexed and ranking separately, at positions 6 and 39.
- Impression growth without position data means little. One page on that same account produced more than 54,000 impressions at an average position in the forties.
- In smaller markets the Google Business Profile usually produces more calls than the website does.
