A growing share of homeowners now ask an assistant who to call before they open a results page. Those answers assemble from a small number of sources, and being one of them is a different problem from ranking, because there is no position to hold and no click to win.

What these have in common is that the query is conversational rather than keyword shaped, and the output is an answer rather than a list. Nobody is comparing ten options. They are being handed two or three.

GEO, AEO, And LLM SEO: What The Terms Mean

The industry has not settled on a name, so you will see several for roughly the same work.

GEO
Generative Engine Optimization. The term with the most adoption among agencies.
AEO
Answer Engine Optimization. Predates the current wave and originally referred to featured snippets and voice assistants. It has been repurposed.
LLM SEO
The plainest of the three and describes the same thing.
AI Search Visibility
What we use on this site, because it describes the outcome rather than the method.

None of these are established enough to bet a page on, which is why this one covers all of them. Whichever label the industry lands on, the work underneath does not change.

That work is: structured data a machine can read, consistent business information everywhere it appears, content that answers a question directly, and specific verifiable claims rather than marketing language. Almost all of it was already good SEO practice.

Why The Unit Is The Passage, Not The Page

This is the part that actually changes how content gets written.

A conversational query has no keyword to rank for. When someone asks an assistant who to call for a repipe in their city, the system retrieves passages from several sources and assembles an answer. You are not competing for position three. You are competing to be one of the chunks pulled in.

That rewards different things than classic SEO does.

  • Question As Heading, Answer In The First Two Sentences

A section that warms up for three paragraphs before answering will not be retrieved, because the retrievable passage does not contain the answer.

  • One Specific Number Per Section

Systems favor passages with concrete detail over passages with adjectives.

  • Self-Contained Sections

A passage that only makes sense after reading the two above it does not survive being lifted out of context.

  • Corroboration Across Sources

A claim that appears only on your own website is a claim. The same claim appearing on your site, your Google Business Profile, an industry directory, and a podcast appearance is a fact. This is the part most contractors skip and it may be the largest lever available.

Entity Clarity And Schema

Before a system can recommend your business it has to be confident about what your business is.

That sounds obvious and it is where most contractor websites fail. The site says the company does HVAC work. The Google Business Profile lists a different primary category. The Facebook page uses a slightly different business name. A directory listing has the old phone number. None of these is a serious problem alone. Together they make the entity ambiguous, and an ambiguous entity does not get recommended.

Entity clarity means the same name, the same category, the same phone number, and the same description everywhere the business appears. Boring, unglamorous, and it does more than most tactics.

Structured data is how you state it in a form a machine reads without interpretation. Organization schema for the business, Service schema for what you do, Person schema for the people who run it, and sameAs links connecting the business to its profiles elsewhere. This is not a ranking trick. It is removing the guesswork.

One practical note: schema and visible page content must agree. Marking up a claim your page does not make is a policy violation, and it is also the kind of shortcut that stops working.

**Proven** In the sense that it was already worth doing and clearly carries over: Structured data. Consistent business information across every surface. Question-formatted headings with direct answers. Specific verifiable numbers. Reviews and third-party mentions. Site speed and crawlability. None of this is new and all of it helps.

**Unproven** In the sense that it is plausible and unmeasured: llms.txt, a proposed file for declaring site content to language models. Costs nothing to add and there is no evidence yet that any major system reads it. We add it. We do not charge for it.

Most GEO tooling currently on the market. The category is young and the measurement is weak.

Any claim of guaranteed placement in an AI answer. Nobody controls what a language model outputs, including the companies that build them.

If an agency is charging a premium specifically for AI search optimization, ask what they are doing that differs from the proven list above. If the answer is a tool subscription, that is worth knowing before you buy.

How To Measure AI Search Visibility

Measurement is the weakest part of this discipline and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

REFERRAL TRAFFIC IN GOOGLE ANALYTICS (GA4). Create a custom channel group matching referral sources including chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com. Volume will be low. It is still real attribution and almost nobody is watching it.

GOOGLE SEARCH CONSOLE (GSC) IMPRESSIONS RELATIVE TO CLICKS. A widening gap can indicate your content is being surfaced and summarized without earning a click. Worth watching as a directional signal. There is no official AI Overview impression report in Search Console, whatever you may have read.

A MANUAL PROMPT PANEL. This is the most useful and the least technical. Write fifteen to twenty prompts a customer would actually type. Run them across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity in a fresh session with no history. Log whether the business is named and who was named instead. Repeat monthly.

The panel doubles as a sales tool. Running it live on a prospect's brand during a call, and showing them they appear in none of the four, is more persuasive than any deck.

GA4 Referral Traffic

Create a custom channel group matching chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com.

02

Search Console Gap

Watch impressions relative to clicks. A widening gap can indicate citation without a click.

03

Manual Prompt Panel

Write 15 to 20 prompts. Run them across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. Log whether the business is named. Repeat monthly.
