For most contractors the Google Business Profile produces more phone calls than the website does, and it is usually the least finished thing they own. Optimization means getting the categories, services, service areas, reviews, and tracking right so the profile shows up for the searches that turn into work.

Why Your Google Business Profile Outranks Your Website

The map pack sits above organic results for local intent. When someone searches for a contractor near them, three profiles appear before the first website link, and on a phone those three occupy most of the screen.

The numbers from one Parker, AZ HVAC engagement of ours: in a three-month window the profile produced 66 phone calls, 61 clicks through to the website, and 12 chat starts. 372 total interactions across 908 profile views. In the same period, organic search sent a fraction of that traffic to the site.

Google Business Profile Performance, Parker AZ HVAC client

74 percent of those profile views came from Google Search and 26 percent from Google Maps. 64 percent were on mobile. That split matters, because it means most people finding the business never opened Maps and never typed a website address. They searched, saw the profile, and called from it.

Three factors decide placement: relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what was searched, and you control it completely. Distance is how close you are to the searcher, and you control almost none of it. Prominence is how established your business appears, which is mostly reviews and mostly earned over time.

Relevance

Categories, services, description. You control this entirely.

Distance

How close you are to the searcher. You control almost none of it.

Prominence

Mostly reviews. Slowest to build, hardest to copy.

Most profiles lose on relevance, which is the one that was free to fix.

Categories, Services, And Service Areas

Your primary category is the single highest impact field on the profile. It determines which searches you are eligible to appear for at all, before ranking is even considered.

01

Primary Category

The single highest impact field. It determines which searches you are eligible to appear for at all. Get it wrong and no amount of review building surfaces you for the work you want.

02

Services List

Separate from categories and commonly left empty. Every service you add is another chance to match a specific search. Write them the way customers search, not the way you invoice.

03

Service Areas

Determines eligibility, not visibility. Listing twenty cities does not make you rank in twenty. Stretching across a region you cannot serve weakens the signal for the markets you can.

The mistake that costs the most is choosing a category that describes a service rather than a business. HVAC Contractor and HVAC Repair Service are both real categories, and they are not the same claim. A contractor is a business that does HVAC work, which makes you eligible for installation, replacement, and repair searches. A repair service is a business that repairs HVAC, which can make you ineligible for the installation searches that carry the ticket.

Roof Repair Service

The same pattern runs through every trade. Painting Contractor rather than House Painting Service. Concrete Contractor rather than Concrete Repair. Roofing Contractor rather than Roof Repair Service. When two categories both describe you, the broader one is almost always correct, because eligibility comes before ranking and you cannot rank for a search you are not eligible for.

Secondary categories broaden the searches you can appear for, and they are not free. Adding categories loosely related to your core work dilutes the relevance signal for the ones that matter. Add the ones that describe work you actually do and want more of. Skip the rest.

If you operate without a storefront customers visit, you are a service area business. Hide the address, set the areas, and be accurate about them.

Reviews, Velocity, And What Google Actually Counts

Review velocity beats review count. A steady flow of reviews earned after completed jobs signals an active business. Twenty reviews arriving in one week signals something else, and Google treats it accordingly.

Recency matters too. A profile with 200 reviews where the newest is fourteen months old reads as a business that has slowed down. Forty reviews with several from the last month reads as one that is busy.

The Parker client reached 26 Google reviews from zero in roughly six months by asking every customer after every completed job. Not a campaign, not a push. A process attached to job completion so it happens without anyone remembering to do it.

Two things violate Google's review policies and both are common. Review gating means asking only the customers you expect will leave a positive review, usually by surveying first and routing happy customers to Google and unhappy ones somewhere private. That is against policy. Suggesting what a customer should write, including asking them to mention a specific service or city, is also against policy.

Ask everyone. Make it easy. Respond to all of them, including the bad ones, because the response is read by the next person deciding whether to call you.

Two Policy Violations

Review gating means asking only the customers you expect will leave a positive review. That is against policy. Suggesting what a customer should write, including asking them to mention a service or a city, is also against policy.

Posts, Photos, And Q&A

Honest assessment on each, because there is a lot of confident advice here that does not hold up.

POSTS do not directly move map pack rankings. What they do is occupy space on your profile when someone is deciding between you and two competitors, and they show a business that is active. Worth doing weekly if it takes ten minutes. Not worth agonizing over.

PHOTOS matter more than posts. Profiles with real job photos get more engagement than profiles with a logo and a stock image. Geotagging photos before upload has been recommended for years and there is no reliable evidence Google reads that data. Upload real photos regularly and skip the geotagging ritual.

Q&A is the most underused section on the profile. Anyone can ask a question and anyone can answer, including you. Seeding the questions customers actually ask, and answering them plainly, puts useful information directly on the profile where it is visible before anyone clicks through. It also prevents a competitor or a confused stranger from answering first.

None of these three will outrank a competitor with better categories and a stronger review profile. They are the difference between two similar profiles.

Suspensions, Reinstatement, And What Triggers Them

Suspension is the risk nobody discusses until it happens, and recovery can take weeks.

01

Name Keywords

Adding service terms or a city to the business name

02

Unstaffed Address

Virtual offices, mail suites, registered agent addresses

03

Category Mismatch

Categories that do not reflect the actual work

04

Sudden Changes

Address, name, and categories edited in the same week

05

Duplicate Listings

More than one profile for the same business

Common triggers:

Adding keywords to the business name. "Smith Plumbing" is fine. "Smith Plumbing Emergency Drain Repair Phoenix" is a violation and it is one of the most frequently reported causes.

Using an address you do not staff. Virtual offices, mail suites, coworking addresses, and registered agent addresses are all common triggers. Google requires a location staffed during stated hours or in-person contact at the customer's location.

Category mismatch, where the categories do not reflect the work the business actually does.

Sudden changes. Editing the address, name, and categories in the same week draws attention. Make significant changes one at a time.

Duplicate listings for the same business.

If a profile is suspended, the reinstatement process requires documentation proving the business operates as described. Utility bills, a lease, business licenses, insurance certificates, and photos of signage. Gather these before you need them.

The prevention is straightforward: be accurate. Most suspensions trace back to something the business knew was a stretch.

Tracking What Your Profile Produces

If you cannot separate profile-driven calls from website-driven calls, you cannot tell which part of your marketing is working.

Three things to set up:

  • UTM Parameters

On the website link in your profile. Without them, every visitor arriving from your profile is recorded in analytics as direct traffic, indistinguishable from someone who typed your address. This is a five-minute fix and almost nobody does it.

  • GBP Insights

For calls, direction requests, website clicks, and the discovery versus direct search split. Discovery means someone searched a service or category and found you. Direct means they searched your name. For a business trying to reach new customers, the discovery number is the one that matters.

  • Call Tracking

That distinguishes profile calls from site calls. Google supports a tracking number on the profile provided the primary number matches your other listings.

One warning worth stating plainly: Google Business Profile retains only about three months of performance data. Export it monthly or it is gone. The Parker figures on this page exist because they were exported before the window closed.

And configure conversion tracking on the website from day one. We learned this on that same account, where analytics was installed but phone click and form submission events were never set up as key events. Several months of website conversion data simply does not exist. The profile numbers survived only because Google tracks those separately.
