Local SEO is the work of appearing in the map pack, the three business listings that sit above organic results for local searches. It is a different discipline from ranking a web page, because most of the work happens on your Google Business Profile rather than on your site.
How The Map Pack Decides Who Shows Up
Three factors, and you control two of them.
Relevance
Free to fix. Where most contractors lose.
Distance
Fixed. Plan around it rather than fight it.
Prominence
Mostly reviews. Where you win long term.
RELEVANCE is how well your profile matches what was searched. It comes from your categories, your services list, and your description. This is the factor most contractors lose on, and it is the one that is free to fix.
DISTANCE is how close your business is to the person searching. You control almost none of it. A contractor twelve miles out will lose some searches to one who is four miles out, regardless of who is better. Accept it and stop optimizing for markets you are not physically near.
PROMINENCE is how established your business appears. Reviews carry most of the weight here, along with mentions elsewhere on the web. It is the slowest of the three to build and the hardest for a competitor to copy.
The practical read: relevance is where a new company gains ground fastest, prominence is where it wins long term, and distance is the constraint you plan around rather than fight.
Worth knowing how much traffic this represents. On a Parker, AZ HVAC client's profile, 74 percent of profile views came from Google Search and 26 percent from Google Maps, with 64 percent on mobile. Most of those people never opened Maps and never typed a website address. They searched, saw the profile, and called from it.
Google Business Profile Fundamentals
The profile is the asset, and most contractor profiles are half finished.
Primary category is the single highest impact field. It decides which searches you are eligible to appear for at all. The most common mistake is picking a category that describes a service rather than a business. HVAC Contractor and HVAC Repair Service are not the same claim, and the narrower one can make you ineligible for the installation searches that carry the ticket.
The services list is separate from categories and is commonly left empty. Every service you add is another chance to match a specific search. Write them the way customers search rather than the way you invoice.
Service areas determine eligibility, not visibility. Listing twenty cities does not make you rank in twenty cities, and stretching across a region you cannot realistically serve weakens the signal for the markets you can.
That is the short version. The full treatment including posts, photos, Q and A, suspensions, and reinstatement is on our Google Business Profile Optimization page.
NAP Consistency And Citations
Worth being honest here, because a lot of agencies still sell citation building as a core service and it has not been one for years.
NAP consistency means your name, address, and phone number matching across the web. It still matters, but as a hygiene item rather than a growth lever. Conflicting information across directories can create confusion. Identical information across two hundred directories does not produce rankings.
Bulk citation building was genuinely effective a decade ago. Google has since gotten much better at understanding entities without needing the same listing repeated everywhere, and the returns have flattened accordingly.
What still earns attention: the handful of directories that actually matter in your trade, industry associations you genuinely belong to, local organizations, and any listing where a real person might plausibly find you. Quality and relevance over volume.
If an agency is quoting you a package built around hundreds of citations, ask what the last one produced.

Reviews As A Local Ranking Factor
Reviews carry most of the prominence weight, and prominence is the factor a competitor cannot quickly copy.
Velocity beats count. A steady flow of reviews earned after completed jobs signals an active business. Twenty arriving in one week signals something else and Google treats it accordingly.
Recency matters alongside velocity. A profile with 200 reviews where the newest is fourteen months old reads as a business that has slowed down. Forty reviews with several from the last month reads as one that is busy.
A Parker, AZ HVAC client went from zero to 26 Google reviews in roughly six months by asking every customer after every completed job. Not a campaign. A process attached to job completion so it happens without anyone having to remember.
Two things violate Google's review policies and both are common. Review gating means asking only the customers you expect will leave a positive review, usually by surveying first and routing happy customers to Google. Suggesting what a customer should write, including asking them to mention a service or a city, is also against policy.
Ask everyone. Make it easy. Respond to all of them, because the response gets read by the next person deciding whether to call you.

- Map pack placement is decided by relevance, distance, and prominence. You control relevance completely and prominence over time.
- Primary category is the highest impact field on a Google Business Profile. It determines which searches you are eligible for at all.
- Bulk citation building has flattened as a ranking lever. NAP consistency still matters as hygiene rather than as growth.
- Review velocity and recency beat raw count. Filtering who you ask or suggesting what they write both violate Google review policy.
- On one Parker, AZ HVAC client's profile, 74 percent of views came from Google Search rather than Maps, and 64 percent were on mobile.
