Run twenty prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude and log whether your company is named. Most HVAC contractors appear in zero of twenty. The cause is usually inconsistent business information rather than weak content, and this guide gives you both the prompts and the audit that explains the result.
The way homeowners find a contractor has shifted. A growing share now ask an AI assistant who to call before they open a search results page, and the answer they get back names two or three businesses rather than listing ten blue links.
That is a different problem from ranking on Google. A search results page gives you a slot to compete for. An AI answer gives you a recommendation, and if your company is not one of the two or three named, you are not in the conversation at all.
What determines whether you appear is whether a system can confidently describe what your business is, where it works, and what it does well. That confidence comes from consistent information across your Google Business Profile, your website, and the directories where you appear. Both the profile and the site matter, because an AI system reads both and checks them against each other.
Start with ChatGPT and run all twenty prompts there. Open a fresh session with no account logged in and no chat history, and replace [city] with your primary market.
Then spot check five prompts on Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Claude. Pick one from each category. You are checking whether the pattern holds across platforms, not building a complete dataset.
That is thirty five runs and it takes about twenty five minutes.
Always type the city name into the prompt rather than relying on the platform to infer your location. If you are testing a market you are not physically in, that matters more, because some platforms weight your actual location heavily.

Not an HVAC contractor? Copy this page into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and paste the prompt below. It will rewrite the panel for your trade and your market.
The clarifying questions matter. They force the model to ask about your services and your market before it writes, which produces something usable instead of generic.
Print this page or copy it into a spreadsheet. Run all twenty prompts on ChatGPT and record the results.
Mark P for partial. That means your business was mentioned in the answer but not recommended, or appeared in a list without being one of the top picks. Partial is a real result and it means something different from either yes or no.

Your score falls into one of five categories. Each one tells you what to fix next.
Zero appearances
This is the common result on a first run. It does not mean the business is invisible in search. It means an AI system cannot confidently recommend it. Go to the audit below.
Mentioned but not recommended
Your business appears in the answer without being one of the businesses the model puts forward. This usually means the system knows you exist and does not have enough to say about you. Reviews that mention specific services, and content that answers specific questions, are what move a mention into a recommendation.
Named only on your own company name
The profile and the basic information are working. The gap is that nothing connects your business to the services and questions people search.
One competitor in most answers
They have a source advantage. Usually consistent information across more surfaces, more third party mentions, or content that answers the question directly. Worth looking at what they publish.
Named in several
Rare. The foundation is working and the opportunity is coverage across more of the twenty.
The twelve point audit below checks whether a system can confidently identify your business. Most contractors score under six on the first run, and most of the gaps are fixable without a developer.
Under 6: An AI system cannot confidently describe your business. Start with items 1, 2, and 9, which cost nothing and take an afternoon.
6 to 9: A system can identify you but cannot differentiate you. Items 6, 7, and 8 are the gap and they are a content problem.
10 or more: The foundation is there. The gap is coverage across more of the questions people ask.
Items 4, 5, 6, 7, and 12 usually require a developer. Item 11 takes months and cannot be rushed. Item 1 means auditing every listing that exists, which is tedious and unavoidable. Most contractors can fix three or four of these themselves. The rest is why agencies exist.
Want the audit run on your actual site? Paste this into ChatGPT or Claude with your URL.
Run it once to establish a baseline, then again after making changes to your profile, website, or directory listings. Quarterly is enough for most contractors. The prompts take about twenty five minutes and the audit takes another fifteen, so it is not a large time investment.
It is early, but the direction is clear. Homeowners are asking AI assistants who to call before they open a search results page. When an AI names two or three businesses, those businesses get the call. The volume is smaller than Google search today, but it is growing and the competition is thinner.
The foundation overlaps heavily. Consistent business information, structured data, and content that answers questions directly help both. The difference is that AI systems synthesize across sources rather than ranking pages, so third party mentions and corroboration matter more than they do in traditional search.
No. Nobody controls what a model outputs, including the companies that build them. Any service promising guaranteed placement in AI answers is selling something that cannot be delivered. What you can do is make your business easier for a system to identify and recommend, which is what this guide covers.
If the gap is inconsistent business information, fixing it can produce results within weeks as systems re crawl your profile and listings. If the gap is content or third party mentions, it takes months. The audit tells you which gap you have and sets the timeline.
